As the opioid crisis continues to plague our country, researchers are looking for ways to keep people safe, and still have a handle on their chronic pain. One method that has shown promise is the use of cannabis instead of opioids. That information comes from the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use in a recently published study. Their findings were published in an issue of PLOS Medicine that focused on substance dependence.
In this study, researchers found that when cannabis was used instead of illegally obtained opioid painkillers, people were able to maintain a level of control over the pain that they experienced, and stay safer in the process. The conclusion that this team came to was that giving people increased access to cannabis is a far better alternative than the use of opioids.
This is happening in many parts of the U.S. In many states, recreational marijuana is now legal. In others, medical usage is legal even if it’s not easily accessible for everyone. It is a step toward allowing people to have more say in their medical care. There’s still a long way to go toward giving people more access to flexible care, but cannabis might be a decent alternative for people who feel like they have tried everything, but haven’t seen any success yet. Personalized care is important because it places the person at the center of things, and not their disability or health issue. Person-centered care focuses on the person. This makes things that don’t nicely fall into the category of medicine make more sense when planning for their future. We all have needs, and they’re not always easily defined.
That’s why in-home care is so important to us. Everyone is different and has different needs and desires regarding their goals for care. The ideal type of care for one person isn’t necessarily going to be ideal for another. Having a degree of choice when it comes to the customization of care is important, just like it is something that is important in each of our lives before senior care becomes necessary.
Because cannabis isn’t something that everyone is willing to try, even if it is a safer alternative than other medications. There is still a strict stigma for many when it comes to this drug even if it is now legal in many parts of the country. That holds true for CBD use, too. Even if there is no psychoactive ingredient in the drug, because of its association with marijuana, a lot of people believe that it’s wrong to try it.
And that’s okay. What’s good for one isn’t always good for another.
