Caring for an older loved one is hard enough, but what do you do if both mom and dad are in need of senior care at the same time?
Unfortunately, this is a growing concern as the senior population grows, and it’s a question that will need to be addressed more and more frequently by families that never thought that they would need to even consider such a possibility. However, it’s something that might very well be a reality for you now or in the near future.
Luckily, there are possible solutions out there for you.
Family care is one of the most widely used solutions, but that doesn’t mean that it’s always the best. There are stories of families moving across the country so that they can step in and help aging parents to take care of things around the house so that they can continue living their lives as normally as possible. This works for some situations, but not all. Sometimes the needs are just too severe for a family member to take care of them completely. No matter how well intentioned you are in these situations, caring for mom and dad is just going to be too much.
In these cases, something more is necessary. Caring for two parents is tough–much tougher than most of us are prepared for. Even if you have a background in acting as a caregiver, the emotional and physical demands of this can become overwhelming. Having a professional on your side to help alleviate some of the burden can be a huge blessing. This doesn’t mean that you are giving up or quitting on your family, but rather that you are taking the appropriate steps to give them the high level of care that they deserve.
Other types of care might be helpful, too. Assisted living or a senior living community might be options, especially if these places will allow your mom and dad to remain together. This way, the family is preserved, but they are receiving the additional supervision that they need.
