If you were to favor one of your children over the other, it would be a really big deal. No one would be happy about it. I have three kids, and although I treat them differently, I never favor one over the other.
But every day, some groups of seniors are favored over others. Unfortunately, the U.S. medical system treats people with some health issues differently than others. For example, those battling cancer are often able to get some health benefits that those with dementia cannot. Medicare will cover some things, but not others. Some struggle more with care than others do.
There’s nothing wrong with differences. In fact, differences are what makes things like senior care effective. I have very different needs than you do, and if you and I were treated exactly the same, one of us would likely not be treated as well as the other. Being treated exactly the same isn’t a good thing.
It’s when someone is treated in a way that their individual needs, goals, and wants are taken into account that the highest level of care can be given. Individualized care is often of a far greater quality than other types of care, simply because they acknowledge the person that’s receiving help in a way that a cookie cutter model doesn’t. If you went to the doctor for an issue, you would want them to look at your history and take it into account when prescribing treatment for the way forward. Just going with what has worked for the majority of others isn’t always the best choice.
At the end of the day, there’s nothing that you or I can do about what other senior care companies and other people are doing. We can only have an influence over our own actions and help out those around us. That’s one of the reasons why education is such an important thing to us. We can’t provide care for every single person in our community, but we can help some. We can have conversations and provide direction for a lot more people than we can provide care for. This might seem like a small thing, but it’s very important to us and those that we can help. Even a small thing like this can have a profound impact on the quality of lives of the seniors in our sphere of influence.
