Sometimes, in-home care isn’t the perfect choice. In-home care does a lot of great things for seniors, and it can even improve the quality of life that many elderly folk experience, but that doesn’t always make it the best choice.
What in-home care can do is to help your mom or dad get through each day in a safe manner without needing to leave their homes. A skilled caregiver can help with things like meal preparation, getting around the house, making sure that medications are properly managed. Many care services even provide transportation to and from medical appointments, the grocery store, and religious services.
When you hear the term “in-home care,” it usually does not refer to medical care. Home health care can provide this, but it is a different type of service, and not all caregivers or companies provide this level of care. It is something that must be provided by a trained nurse and tends to have a higher price tag attached to it. This can be a great alternative for an elderly person that does have more advanced medical needs, but it isn’t necessarily needed by all seniors looking for assistance.
In-home care is ideal for an elderly individual that doesn’t need a lot of help, but needs some to stay safe throughout the day. This might even just be someone who provides companionship. That extra set of eyes is often all that’s need to give you and your family the peace of mind that you deserve.
But in many states, in-home care is not covered by insurance if it is non-medical in nature. This can be extremely expensive and it isn’t realistic for everyone. In other instances, it just isn’t enough help.
Sometimes, the constant care and supervision that a nursing home provides is actually the best type of care for an older individual. Sometimes, something that focuses on relieving pain is what’s best. Again, it all depends on the needs that your loved one is facing. If you are unsure of what those needs are, then consulting with a doctor is the first step that you should take. They will be able to give you a much better assessment of what’s needed, what might be helpful, and what they would do in your situation.
Each family and each individual within a family is unique and has a unique set of needs. What serves as great care for one individual won’t necessarily be what’s great for another. For this reason, it makes sense that in-home care won’t be perfect for everyone. We believe that this is a service that is currently underutilized, but that doesn’t make it the ideal type of senior care for your family. It’s important that you know what your loved one needs out of their care, and then find a service that can meet those needs and fits within your family’s budget.
Finding the right care team can be difficult, but if you look at your mom’s care needs as a starting point, finding the best caregiver for your family will suddenly become much easier to achieve.
