A recent study found that spinal cord stimulation might have some benefits for stroke survivors when it comes to improving mobility during the recovery process.
This study pointed to a new neurotechnology that involves a pair of thin implants that go along the neck and interact with neural circuits. This stimulation allowed stroke patients to open and close their fists, lift their arm above their head, or use a fork and a knife. The patients that this technology was tested on hadn’t been able to do these activities prior to the use of the technology.
Strokes can cause extreme mobility issues, especially as time after the stroke passes. Researchers tend to believe that the first six months after a stroke is when rehabilitation takes place. After this time, advances in mobility tend to stop. They hope that this new concept might become an effective treatment method down the road.
This study comes out of the University of Pittsburgh. Neurotechnology is still pretty new in the field of medicine, but hopefully this study helps doctors to better understand how it works and how it might help those struggling with health issues. In this case, hopefully it provides helpful and effective treatment for those that have suffered from a stroke. There’s still a lot of room for growth when it comes to research here, but this could be a big push in the right direction when it comes to furthering understanding.
They published their findings in the journal, Nature Medicine.
A stroke is a serious health event. When someone has a stroke, it’s important to get them connected to emergency treatment as soon as possible. Research shows that if treatment is received in the first two hours after a stroke starts, the prognosis for the person suffering tends to be much better.
Still, even with timely treatment, a stroke survivor might have a very difficult time doing the things that they once did with the same level of ease. Physical therapy, speech therapy, and assistance around the house might be necessary for an extended period of time. The person suffering might never fully be able to get around like they once did without extra help.
