The frequency of strokes might be far larger than what most people think, a recently published study indicated. According to the American Heart Association, about one in three Americans have experienced what is called a “warning stroke.” Also called mini strokes, these are technically strokes, but without the bulk of the negative impact that we associated with other types of stroke. Transient ischemic attacks–mini strokes–only present a temporary health concern.
However, a warning stroke does present an opportunity for those who suffer from them to take more proactive steps to improve their health. Mini strokes are often a sign that a full ischemic stroke is likely in the future, and by using this opportunity as a warning, we are given an opportunity to make lifestyle choice changes so that the odds of another, more devastating, stroke are lessened. Strokes often lead to permanent physical disability, and by preventing them, we can take great strides toward living healthier and longer lives. For our elderly loved ones, even small changes can create a better prognosis and put off the need for senior care. According to the AHA, only about 3 percent of those that have a warning stroke take strides to improve their health.
If this data is correct, we can assume that the elderly population is the most heavily impacted. The longer we live, the more that underlying health concerns can have a negative impact upon our lifestyles. A stroke is one of those things that can have a life altering impact upon our quality of life. Those who have had a stroke often find themselves in need of senior care, either for a short period of time while they undergo recovery and physical therapy, or for the long term. Sadly, recovery is a lifelong process for many people who survive a stroke.
Caring for a loved one who has had a stroke can be difficult. Family caregivers are undertaking something that is very admirable, but not everyone who wishes to care for a loved one can do so with a great degree of success. This is why it is highly recommended that you at least get a free consultation from an in-home care service at some point. You may do a very good job of providing care to your mother or father, but it is always a good idea to have a backup care plan. If something were to happen to you, or your parent’s condition were to worsen, having a professional in place to help with their senior care is smart.
