There are a lot of different kinds of senior care out there. Here at Paradise In-Home Care, we place an emphasis on in-home care (as our name implies), but this isn’t the only thing that we do here. In fact, we try to offer a comprehensive approach to senior care to meet the needs of many different situations.
Today, this post is going to focus on assisted living and what you might want to think about prior to committing to this type of care.
Level of assistance
As a general rule, assisted living facilities do not help out with the medical needs of their residents. With that said, some services are more equipped to meet the unique needs of those residents than others. Some facilities specialize in memory care, others focus on those with more advanced physical needs. Each service is a little bit different in what they specialize in and how they approach the care they give.
Types of rooms
There are two main types of rooms that assisted living facilities offer: private and shared. Just what these look like and how they are executed in practice will differ from state to state, based on that state’s regulations. Different insurance policies will approach payment for these in different ways, too. It’s important to know what you’re hoping for, what insurance will cover, and how it will impact the care of your loved one.
Ability to modify
Your ability to customize and modify whatever service that you are utilizing as needed is important. People’s needs don’t stay the same over time. The level of care that someone is receiving at the onset of their receiving professional level care might not be the same as what is needed a year later. An ability to adapt and modify the care being received is important. Each service’s ability to do this will be different.
At the end of the day, every situation is going to be a little bit different. The right senior care for your family might not be the same thing as what’s right for mine. Same with assisted living. It might be ideal for one situation, but not necessarily another. This is why it’s such a good thing that there are choices out there.
Also, it is important to note that you very well might make mistakes when connecting to care. You can always make changes if you need to. Although a move to a different type of care might be disruptive, it is typically better than sticking it out with something that isn’t helpful.
