We all know that the pandemic has been hard on the senior citizen community. Nursing homes were hit the hardest by COVID-19 and the vast majority of people that lost their lives to the virus were elderly. This has led to a renewed sense of urgency for helping seniors get connected with better care. If the pandemic has a resurgency, or if another pandemic occurs in the future, it is important that we don’t make the same mistakes over again. The older people in our lives deserve much better than this. Right now, we are all in a unique position to think differently about senior care and start making changes now so that seniors won’t be placed in a situation where their health is at risk like it was at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is why President Biden and others have been pushing for a huge infrastructure bill to be passed into law. By installing these safeguards at the federal government level, it’s a lot more likely that seniors will have a higher quality of life across the board when it comes to care. This is especially true for lower income seniors and those that have spent their lives living in poverty. This population is already at a greater risk when it comes to health issues–both physical and mental. Placing safeguards in the type of care that they receive as they age will help to fight some of these problems.
There’s a lot of work ahead of all of us if we’re going to make changes for the better. But these changes are important because they impact the people that we love. They will likely help those of us that are still years away from needing senior care ourselves.
What does this mean for you? First, you need to look at your family’s unique situation. Everyone is a little bit different and each family has different needs, concerns, and goals set for senior care. Some families have very hands on approaches and want to be actively involved and present for every part of a loved one’s care. Other families are okay with a more distant approach. Some people have severe needs that require a lot of care and attention. Some seniors are in relatively good health and don’t need as much intervention. Whatever your family looks like, there are care solutions that you can use to help and avoid placing them in a risky situation.
