Some of the best improvements in any industry or in any product line come from working together. Senior care is no different. If we’re going to see high quality improvements come about in the care industry, it’s important that people are working together for those goals.
This applies to care for a member of your family, too. You’re more likely to get the best care possible for an older loved one when you work with a team.
Communication is a necessity when it comes to teamwork. Years ago, when my youngest son was in Kindergarten, he came home one day and told me, “teamwork makes the dream work.” While it might sound like a silly child’s saying, it holds a lot of truth. Good teams, focused on a goal, communicate with each other because no one part of the team can do it all. Each person on your team plays a different role.
The good news is that communication is easier today than ever before. Smartphones, task management software, and video chat makes communication between team members easier than ever. It ensures that everyone’s on the same page. It can help avoid a lot of problems such as missed medication, alert team members of potential issues, and more.
Finally, collaboration only works when the goals are understood and actively sought out. When it comes to senior care, there can be a lot of goals out there. Ensuring that your team is all on the same page is one key to success. That doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone has to have the same specific goals. For example, if your mom’s financial planner’s main goal is to maximize wealth so that there is enough money to pay for care ten years from now, that doesn’t mean that this also needs to be your mom’s memory care specialist’s goal. They operate in two different atmosphere’s and each of their goals are important, but maybe not as important to everyone else on the team.
What is important is that the team agrees upon the big goals. Ensuring that your loved one gets the professional care that most closely meets their needs–in the way that they wish to receive care–can be a good example of a larger team goal. How this is achieved might vary from person to person. But the fact that it remains the overarching goal can act as a northstar of sorts for the team.
Of course, having the right people on your team is important, too. Medical professionals, care professionals, geriatric rights advocates, attorneys, family members, and more all might have a place on your personalized team. The goal is to connect the people that you love to the resources that will help them the most. Collaboration can help make this more of a reality.
