If you are concerned about the perceived crisis when it comes to the expected shortage of senior care workers in the not so distant future, you are not alone. Medical professionals and senior care services across the United States have been aware of the potential for an issue here for many years. And luckily, they have been doing things about it. But one answer at least isn’t coming from an expected source. In fact, many people are surprised to learn that one of the most promising solutions to the shortage of senior care specialists is coming from the world of technology.
It makes sense if you think about it. Technology has already had such a huge impact on so many other parts of our lives, why wouldn’t impact how we care for our elderly family members? It can be strange to think about our parents or grandparents embracing and using high tech items on a daily basis, but that just means that there is a good deal of room for tech to make an impact on lives here.
Taking this a step further, some individuals believe that there is potential for robots to play an influential role in the world of senior care. If you’re worried about something like a scene out of a science fiction happening, there’s very little chances of this happening. But many people already have robots assisting them with housework and don’t even know it. Think about the Roomba brand vacuum cleaner. This is a personal robot that cleans your house’s floor for you while you’re asleep or away. Robots that assist with senior care will most likely be similar in nature to this, if they are adopted for use at all.
Robots have a lot of potential for helping the elderly in some way. Medication management, cleaning, and other daily tasks present a challenge, and technology might just help us overcome these challenges.
Even the most innovative of our older loved ones may face a day when they can’t do everything by themselves. In-home care can be very beneficial to these people. A robot can never replace a real live person when it comes to compassionate care, but it would be foolish to say that no benefits can be provided by an automated machine. For example, if you are away from home for 12 hours per day, and a caregiver is only able to work 8 hours per day, there is going to be a gap in their coverage. Many people are okay with this time alone, but not all are. Having some sort of backup system in place can be a huge help in relieving stress on your end. It can provide an extra level of safety for your loved one, alerting you or emergency services if help is needed.
The future of elder care is still uncertain, but technology will undoubtedly play a role in care. Whether robots will actually play a role or not remains to be seen. But either way, technological advances play an exciting part in making care more thorough and less expensive for the average family.
