One of the major goals of senior care of all sorts is to help improve the quality of life that an elderly person is experiencing. Sometimes this can come in the form of a nursing home, when someone has advanced medical needs that require daily attention. Having a nurse closeby and constantly on hand is an easy way to attend to this need and improve quality of life as a result. If something happens, someone with advanced medical training is on hand to assist.
Another way to improve the quality of life that someone experiences is through improved supervision. This is one of the big strengths on in-home care. An in-home caregiver can be in your loved one’s home when you are not, and help them get through each day safely. If they have trouble getting around or managing medications, a trained caregiver can assist with this, too. The end result is a better life.
Some senior care homes are using innovative ideas to try and improve the quality of life of their residents. One home attempts to give dementia patients more say in their room’s decor. Residents are allowed to choose which decorative items they want within their room. They are even allowed to design or pick out a decal to place over their door. Some decide to mimic the door from their old home while others get more creative. It’s an easy way for those with dementia more say in what’s going on around them. The staff in these homes have observed that it can help to reduce anxiety levels in the seniors that live there.
Other companies are working on virtual reality tools to help seniors live a better life. This can be helpful for those that are dealing with chronic pain, dementia, or even end of life care. It is a way to experience life around them without ever leaving the room. It’s certainly not a perfect solution and there’s still a lot of room for growth in this area, but it is one way to temporarily relieve the stresses of senior care for those that are struggling.
There are things that you can do, too. For example, finding a caregiver that can do more than just supervise your loved one is a good start. A great caregiver does more than just make sure your mom or dad is safe, but provides companionship and helps them with their daily tasks. This might be as simple as sitting around and talking with them, or it can mean taking part in hobbies and pastimes with them so that they can stay active and continue doing the things that they love.
That’s the great thing about in-home care. Because it is a done in a one-to-one setting, the caregiver can do a lot of things that a caregiver in a care facility cannot do. They can be more active in the life of your parent.
