When someone has a stroke, immediate treatment is vital if someone is going to have an optimal outcome. However, even with timely treatment, some people show strong recovery after a stroke and some don’t. Why is this?
Researchers have learned that surviving neurons can trigger repair within the brain, but they need to be activated in order for this to happen. New research gives some additional insight into how this repair process occurs.
The team of scientists believe that the repair process begins when neurons near the damaged portions of the brain secrete lipids that trigger repair.
The fatty acid called DGLA is responsible for this, according to a newly published study. An enzyme called PLA2GE2 is responsible for DGLA production. When there is a deficiency of PLA2GE2, inflammation is increased and recovery doesn’t occur. The researchers used mouse models to obtain this data. They hope that this knowledge can help doctors give stroke survivors more effective treatment in the future. This could eventually lead to a higher quality of life for those that suffer from ischemic strokes–but there’s a lot more work that needs to be done prior to reaching this point.
It’s important to note that this study focused on ischemic strokes, the most common type of stroke that occurs. It is characterized by a temporary block of oxygenated blood flow to the brain, and can cause some severe issues. Unfortunately, many people are significantly impacted by this type of event on a yearly basis. Some people are permanently disabled, some people do not survive. Improved outcomes are always a high priority.
This study was conducted by Tokyo Medical and Dental University. They published their findings in the medical journal, Neuron. Strokes are one of the most devastating medical events that can happen to the elderly and this study goes a long way toward improving upon our understanding of them. Hopefully, this can be inspiration for future research and advancements, too. Our loved ones deserve better medical care than what currently exists, and this kind of work gets us one step closer to that.
People that suffer from a stroke have a tough road ahead of them. There are no guarantees and it is a long, stressful, and painful process. Stroke survivors and their families deserve the best care possible.
