If we’ve learned anything during the past two years of pandemic, it’s that the senior care sector needs a serious reworking if we’re going to continue to give our loved ones the high level of care and attention that they deserve. Multiple failures of big nursing homes and assisted living facilities have led to tens of thousands of seniors passing away because of COVID-19.
COVID has pointed out our shortcomings. Even though the pandemic is still raging, it’s now up to all of us to try and fix those shortcomings. This is where the size of the care service that you utilize can be of benefit. Oftentimes, a larger nursing home provides a high level of care, but because they tend to be bigger, there are sometimes not enough staff to meet all of the needs of the residents at any given time. Most of the time, this works out, but not always. In fact, sometimes, the larger care services aren’t always better.
A smaller care service tends to have a better percentage of staff to residents. More personalized attention can be given to each of the people being cared for.
It’s a balance. There are things that bigger companies can do that smaller ones cannot. And vice versa. Ideally, you will know what your loved one’s needs are, and then find the services that can best meet those needs. However, for this to happen, you need not only an understanding of what your loved one will want and need out of care, but what different services can provide. This takes time and education. It’s usually something that requires a whole team of people. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with nursing homes. They provide a very important service and thousands of people across the country truly benefit from the work that they do. But unfortunately, a lot of people end up in nursing homes that don’t necessarily need this higher level of care. They end up in nursing homes because their insurance will cover some of the cost, and not pay for a more appropriate service. These people end up in a situation that isn’t ideal and have freedom and quality of life needlessly restricted. In these instances, a nursing home can be a detriment, rather than a blessing.
This is one of many reasons why smaller care companies are rewriting how we think about senior care. Smaller companies (like ours!) have the capability of catering to the specific needs of the people that they serve. They can customize the care and activities provided not just to meet someone’s needs, but to go out of their way to help the individual thrive. In these instances, smaller care services can be far better.
