New research indicates that there might be an easy, early, and accurate way to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. The research was conducted over the last several years and seems to indicate that there is a specific cell model that occurs within the olfactory mucosa that can help doctors conclude that someone does or does not have Alzheimer’s disease–and it looks like it might be able to be done with accuracy very early on in the development of this disease.
The diagnosis process can be as simple as a nasal swab and then analysis of cells within the nose region. If so, this could lead to thousands of people being identified as having Alzheimer’s early in its progress, and thus receive treatment for the disease sooner.
This research was conducted at the University of Eastern Finland. Their results were recently published in the journal, Cells. To be clear, this is not a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but if the research proves to be accurate and hold up over time, it might help lead to earlier diagnosis of this devastating disease.
As you probably already know, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. But that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing that can be done to help improve the quality of life that someone suffering from this disease is experiencing. And the sooner that it is detected, the more likely that it is that doctors can help stave off the negative symptoms of the disease and help the individual to live as close to a normal life as possible. If this new method of detecting Alzheimer’s can help to bring about a diagnosis earlier, then treatment can begin earlier. This can only be helpful when it comes to treating and caring for the person suffering from Alzheimer’s.
Medical treatment is only a part of the puzzle. If you have a loved one that suffers from dementia, you already are aware of this. Doctors can do a lot, but they can’t do everything. They aren’t there with you in the home helping with daily tasks and providing support on the ground. Unfortunately, this is a huge part of Alzheimer’s and it often goes ignored until someone is living with it. Having a team that can help with these things can make life a little bit easier.
