A recently published study from the University of Adelaide in Australia revealed some new information regarding Alzheimer’s disease.
The team used zebrafish in their study to look at Alzheimer’s disease and the subtle changes that can occur because of it. Gene mutations were examined and how those impacted brain functioning. One of the common themes that they found was that the gene mutations associated with Alzheimer’s had a significant impact on how oxygen and energy conversion worked.
One of the big symptoms of Alzheimer’s is that there is a noticeable decrease in the amount of energy that is produced within the body. Now, scientists have a better understanding of just why this happens.
The team published their findings in the journal, Disease Models and Mechanisms. Hopefully, this is information that future researchers can build off of and help get us another step closer to curing this terrible disease.
A better understanding of the dynamics behind how Alzheimer’s disease begins and then spreads throughout the brain can lead to a better understanding of how to more effectively slow or stop the spread of the disease. It might even eventually lead to a cure for the disease. Even though researchers continue to make great strides in their understanding of the disease, there’s still a long way to go before a cure is found.
For those that currently struggle with Alzheimer’s, the road is going to be long and difficult ahead of them. There are treatments out there that have been shown to help extend the lifespan of someone suffering from the disease and improve their quality of life, but these treatments are only really helpful if the disease is detected early enough. Many others struggle with the physical and cognitive decline that is a hallmark symptom of the disease. Not only is this a tough thing to go through, it is hard on the loved ones that watch a family member suffer and struggle with things that were once everyday tasks.
