We tend to think of lipids as bad things. After all, lipids are associated with cholesterol, and high cholesterol levels can lead to things like heart disease, stroke, and even death.
But lipids play an important role in the human body. Additionally, there are multiple types of lipids and not all of these are bad. The lipids that we think of as “bad cholesterol” are LDLs, or low-density lipoproteins. But really, lipids are a type of fat and fats are absolutely essential for a healthy life. Brain health is part of that.
Recently, a team of researchers from Japan found that using a substance called HDO and found that linking certain lipids to it can help get substances that assist with stroke recovery into the brain more efficiently.
Therapies similar to this have been tested out in the past when it comes to helping stroke victims, but past methods have proven to only be helpful for a very short while once the stroke begins. This particular method can be applied outside of that window and still be effective, according to preliminary research.
This research came from the Tokyo Medical and Dental University. They published their findings in the medical journal, Molecular Therapy. They believe that their findings are important because most stroke therapies don’t focus on pathological solutions, but rather physical therapies. While these can be effective, researchers believe that a multi-pronged approach has the potential to be even more so. Hopefully, this line of research will open up more doors for future researchers.
