A new study from the European Society of Cardiology reveals that soil pollution levels are linked to an elevated risk of heart disease.
Primarily, the study found that heavy metals and pesticides in the soil ultimately have a detrimental impact on someone’s cardiovascular health. We’ve known that inhaling pesticides can cause cardiovascular disease for quite some time, but this particular study shows that it’s not just the short term use of chemicals that can lead to negative consequences for humans. Pesticides and other pollutants can have a lasting impact on the environment around us for years to come.
And unfortunately, the longer that someone lives in an area, the heavier the impact will be. That means that our older loved ones are going to bear the brunt of the impact that pollution has on lifestyle. If nothing changes, years down the road our children will have to carry this burden.
The team published their findings recently in the journal, Cardiovascular Research.
Examining soil pollution levels in your neighborhood is seldom realistic for the average family. While your local cooperative extension might be able to come out and do a soil analysis in some instances, specific types of pollution are rarely analyzed in these situations. Getting the data that you need to help you make healthy choices for your family is very difficult to do, and therefore, this information probably is not as helpful as you’d like it to be in order to take action and give those that you love a better outcome as they age.
But it’s good to know that things like this do have an impact on how we live. Sometimes finding an explanation for something can provide a peace of mind or understanding that the unknown can’t. And this understanding can help people to live better lives in the future. It’s a small step for some over the short term, but over the long haul, this particular finding has the potential to help many.
Now that we have this understanding, researchers have some work ahead of them to help instill the actions needed to correct soil pollution.
