Neglect has long been a problem in the senior care industry. Some states have been incredibly diligent about this type of abuse, putting very strict procedures in place and cracking down hard on it when it happens. But even with these safeguards in place, it still happens–even in institutional settings like nursing homes and assisted living facilities. This is unacceptable. The seniors in our lives deserve much better than this.
That’s why some states, like Minnesota, are currently upping their game when it comes to protecting seniors. When it comes to assisted living, a lot of facilities have slipped through the cracks. Because care is not as intensive as it is in a nursing home setting, the oversight and implementation of preventative policy has not been as robust.
This is beginning to change with new laws in Minnesota, thanks to the light that the COVID-19 pandemic has shed on care conditions. New laws make assisted living facilities much more protected.
California has long been a leader when it comes to protecting seniors, but there is always room for improvement. Hopefully, we continue to see more and more steps like these being instituted. Our loved ones deserve to be safe and free of worry.
We each have the responsibility to protect our loved ones when, where, and however we can. In some cases, this is really easy. It means keeping our loved ones close, maybe even living with them, and providing for their needs when needed. As these needs become more intensive, this can become more and more difficult, though. This is where we need to lean into senior care and ensure that the care service that we select is able to meet and surpass our loved ones’ needs. This should be easy, but unfortunately, the pandemic has taught us that we can never be too careful. You need a service that you know and trust, not just one that is convenient.
The more involved you are with your loved one’s care, the more safeguards that will naturally be installed into their care. The less likely something unfortunate happening will become. Hopefully, the steps that we are seeing in Minnesota and other parts of the country to further protect vulnerable elderly folk will expand and be more comprehensive and universal. In the meantime, we can all do the little things to protect those we love and those that are near us.
Let us know how we can help. We offer full training and regular updates to the support that our caregivers receive. We also ensure that complete background checks are conducted prior to hire. We do this because we want to take every precaution that we can to make sure that the people we serve are as protected as possible. If this means giving our caregivers more, then we do it. We’re here to help, and this takes a lot of different forms.
