A newly published study looked at the relationship between microscopic bacteria that live within the guy and the severity of stroke. What the research team from the Cleveland Clinic found was quite surprising.
They discovered that there was a connection between microbes within the body and the severity of a stroke that was experienced. Diets high in choline and TMAO resulted in more severe strokes. TMAO, which is short for trimethylamine N-oxide, is a byproduct of red meat that is digested by microbes within the gut. Elevated levels of TMAO in animal models led to more severe strokes.
However, when gut microbes capable of handling TMAO were transplanted into the animal, there was a huge change when it came to the severity of stroke that was experienced.
The team published their findings in the journal, Cell Host & Microbe. Hopefully, this research leads to more along the same vein so that more people can benefit from future findings and live healthier lives.
The team based out of the Cleveland Clinic has done research on TMAO in the past. Previously, they found that elevated levels of TMAO can act as predictors for the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke. It also was a factor in predicting just how difficult the recovery after a stroke might become. Linking these two studies might just be a way to help people at high risk of these health events alleviate the risk that they face.
Heart disease is one of the biggest issues that seniors face. Not only can this lead to death by heart attack and stroke, but it can lead to permanent disability, difficulty with everyday tasks, and other health complications. Reducing the likelihood of a cardiac event can help improve health long into someone’s senior years and reduce the risk of disability.
There are things that you can do on your own to help reduce heart risk. Eating less red meat and fewer eggs lowers the amount of TMAO in your gut and has been shown to help improve heart health. Checking in regularly with your doctor for checkups, stopping smoking, and getting enough exercise can also be of benefit. If you have more questions, it’s important to speak with a medical professional so you can be sure to get the right help for your needs.
