We all love those those stories on the news that highlight excellence and the good things that people do. Whether it’s helping someone get their mail once or twice, or starting a foundation geared to put an end to bullying, these news stories, videos, and memes always end up warming our hearts, even if it is just in passing while we scroll through our Facebook feeds.
But wouldn’t life be better if there were even more of these types of stories? What if the tragedies, scandals, and otherwise bad pieces of news were the exception, and the good stuff was far more prevalent?
One nice example of the good that’s going on around us recently took place in Anaheim. An awards ceremony was held at the end of October to honor those that give back to their community. A lot of these people do these things each and every day without the expectation of getting anything back. They donate their time, money, and resources to help other people. The vast majority of it goes unnoticed. However, things like this particular event hosted by Meals on Wheels help to point out the good deeds that so many people are unaware of or overlook.
Over 600 people attended this black tie dinner.
The cool thing about this? The award ceremony itself was a fundraiser! While honoring those in the community that are making sacrifices to help others, Meals on Wheels was helping their important organization to raise the money that they need to continue to help others. When good things are done and recognized, they can often perpetuate. This was an awesome example of how one good deed can lead to many more.
There’s a lot more good happening in our world than we tend to think, if only because the sensational stories–the bad stuff–tends to get more clicks and views than the good stories do. By drawing attention to the good more often, we can see that there are heroes in our communities, we just walk by them and live so close to them that it’s easy to overlook them. That’s why the volunteer programs like Meals on Wheels that we have in our communities are so important. They allow our neighbors show their true colors on a more regular basis.
Senior care is just one of the many places where our communities need help. Volunteers play such a huge role in how our communities function. Whether it’s by spending an hour a week reading in a nursing home, helping get seniors to appointments, or the delivery of meals to homebound elderly folk, volunteerism is far more helpful than you might think.
There are a lot of ways that you can give back to your community and the families around you. You can get in touch with us for a list of organizations looking for help, contact your local Department of Social Services, or get in touch with a non-profit organization that you’re familiar with. Your help is always appreciated and there are countless ways that you can get involved.
