Spending the holidays with family is important to you, and it’s important to elderly family members, too. This is even more the case if they are currently living in an assisted living facility or a nursing home. Now that it’s Thanksgiving, with Christmas and New Year’s soon to follow, it’s vital that we not only spend time with our immediate families, but also with the elderly loved ones that we might not see everyday. This can be tough if they have disabilities or other issues that make travel difficult, but this only makes seeing them at this time of year that much more important.
Many families find that although a nursing home or other institutionalized type of care might seem like the most readily available answer to helping with advanced daily needs, in-home care is enough to more than meet the needs of their loved one. The big benefit here is, of course, that there’s no need for relocation. Your mom or dad, grandma or grandpa, will not need to leave the home. They can stay where they are, even if you are not around for good portions of the day to assist them. This is what the in-home caregiver is for. Your loved one has no need to go somewhere, and when something like a major holiday comes up, spending time with them is natural because they are already there. It eliminates the stress of holiday travel, too.
There are many other benefits to in-home care, but above all else, this is the most important. Families can be split up all over the globe, but when someone needs help, you want to be there with them, helping them out. This is especially true when it’s an elderly family member and there’s no guarantee that you have many more years together with them. Family members need to be able to do their own thing most of the time, but in situations like this, coming together and being one unit is the most caring, loving thing that you can do for them.
If you currently have a loved one that is in a nursing home, but you have doubts that this is the best type of care for them, it could be worth taking a second look at their situation. Nursing homes serve a very important purpose, but the truth is, not everyone that is living in a skilled nursing facility or something similar needs to be there. It really does need to be looked at on a case by case, individual basis, but some people living in a nursing home will do far better in another type of setting, given that they have the proper level of assistance and supervision. If you have questions, asking around and getting another view on what’s best for your loved one is not going to hurt anyone. It might even make their lives far better as their quality of living goes up and they can spend more time being near the people that they love, too.
