Summer is almost over, but it is still very hot outside. No one feels the heat more than senior citizens as they are heavily affected by it. In some cases, this can be extremely dangerous. Many areas of the U.S. have energy assistance programs for elderly people combat this issue. These are designed to help keep them cool during the summers and warm during winters, all while keeping energy costs down within the home.
The big problem is awareness. Many people don’t even know that these programs exist. The next biggest problem is the fact that implementing this. There are many solutions for this problem, and what it ultimately comes down to is what works best in the given situation. If you have an elderly loved one that lives at home and has no intentions of ever moving somewhere else, something like in-home care would be a perfect solution. A trained caregiver would be quickly become aware of heating and cooling issues and be able to help get them solved.
Of course, in-home care is not the only solution for this. Moving into a well cared for assisted living facility would also be effective. So would having a family member help out with the installation of cooling measures. There are a lot of choices out there, the trick is to find one that works well for your family and go with it.
Many people prefer in-home care because of the options that it leaves you. If you are able to get air conditioning installed for free, and have energy costs reduced at the same time, no financial expenditure will have been made, and therefore there will have been no loss. A caregiver is cheap in comparison to a lot of other choices, and this means that you can always go upward in services if the need arises without any sort of inconvenience. It’s a good place to start at the bare minimum, especially if there are other needs besides heating and cooling issues. In-home care easily addresses these things since a trained caregiver will help with housework, bathing and grooming, preparing food, giving medication reminders, and more. This is not something that is always done by a family member, so if the needs of your elderly loved one are more than the minimum, then you need to start thinking about getting extra help for them.
Sure, the intense heat goes away at the end of summer, but that doesn’t mean that your loved one’s needs will, too. They will still need help around the house, and while air conditioning might no longer be an issue, there will certainly be others that arise. Having a trained caregiver to keep tabs on your parent or grandparent is not only helpful, it is a safe choice. You always want to make sure that their needs are being met, and if this is starting to become difficult for you to do alone, you need a backup plan. There are lots of things to consider, and keeping them cool during the summer is just one of many issues.
