After a stroke occurs, disability is common. Because of the temporary loss of blood to the brain that is the hallmark of a stroke, parts of the body can stop working like they once did. Paralysis in parts of the body are also common. Physical rehabilitation can help to improve this, but it isn’t always successful. Doctors and researchers are currently trying to find new ways to help stroke patients improve here.
One promising new effort has come in the form of a video game. Thanks to the interactive nature of this game, stroke victims are finding new and less stressful ways to receive therapy. So far, this method has proven to be quite helpful. In a study of 32 patients, most were able to regain usage of their arms. They experienced less stiffness and more mobility.
This research was conducted by Northwestern University. Results were recently published in the medical journal Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair.
Progress has been noted in patients who have had decades of immobility. The video game itself is not anything special, but it has shown it can be a useful and motivating tool in initiating therapy where other methods have failed to produce results. In order for the game to successfully help patients, an interface called the myoelectric computer interface was needed to bridge the gap between game and therapy.
