In the past, many assisted living facilities have relied on 911 services when it came to addressing health issues that a senior is facing. For example, if someone has fallen a number of times, family members might agree that assisted living can help you to ensure that your elderly family members stay as safe and sound as possible. If your elderly parent were to fall while in the assisted living facility, standard procedure might be to call an ambulance and take the individual in for an examination. And although this is a good way to ensure that nothing major has occurred in the fall, it is also a difficult experience for the person who is being transported.
Because many seniors do not respond well to frequent travelling, a needless trip to the emergency department can sometimes do more harm than good. Balancing this with a necessity to keep elderly residents safe is difficult, and in response to this, some assisted living facilities are beginning to hire doctors or nurses for this or similar purposes.
This does not mean that assisted living facilities and nursing homes serve the same function, but it does mean that assisted living facility directors are attempting to take steps to keep their residents safer and help them maintain the freedoms that they are used to, all while not making their lives more difficult than they need to be.
In some cases, this might lead to an increase in the cost of services. For some people, this increase might be necessary, but not for everyone. Again, this is a concern, but for some it’s absolutely necessary. Each scenario is a little different, and making sure that your mom or dad has the help that they need isn’t simply a matter of following a previously established checklist or formula.
Assisted living is great for some people, but it’s not perfect for everyone. In some cases, another type of care will be a lot more beneficial. Each case is different, so it’s important to look at your family’s unique situation to see what situation is best before making any sort of care decisions.
