There are so many different vitamins out there making all sorts of different claims. For the average consumer (like you and me) it can be completely overwhelming trying to figure out what the best vitamins might be, and whether or not they actually work.
Luckily, there are organizations and researchers out there that are looking into these sorts of things so we don’t have to just guess. A recent study looking at multivitamins and memory in the senior citizen community unveiled some interesting results.
Before I go any further, I need to mention that it is really important to speak with a doctor before making any sort of changes or additions to the medications and vitamins that you might already be taking.
A recent study looked at a multivitamin designed for seniors. A group of participants was split into two, with one group taking the Centrum Silver multivitamin and the other taking a placebo. After one year, the group of people that had taken the multivitamin scored much higher on memory tests than those that had taken the placebo. All subjects were given a list of words and asked to memorize as many as possible in order to test things like memory and retrieval. The vitamin group was capable of remembering about 25 percent more words than the placebo group.
The research was conducted by the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Their findings were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Statistics say that about one in three American adults take some sort of daily vitamin. Odds are, you and your family already have a vitamin regimen that you adhere to. It is important that whatever vitamins or supplements that you or your loved ones are taking are doing what you hope that they do. It’s also important that they aren’t working against you. Unfortunately, there are some supplements that can counteract medications or just aren’t helpful. Studies like this one are important because they help to better determine what works and what doesn’t. Vitamins might be one more layer of protection when it comes to maintaining health, but again, this is something that you should speak with your doctor about before making any definite decisions.
Vitamins are just one part of it all. The right team is also a key component of success. Senior care can help ensure that your loved ones are connected to the right resources, regardless of what challenges they might be up against. Whether it’s memory loss, cognitive decline, physical disability, or something else, senior care can put supports in place to ensure that your loved ones aren’t just getting by during their senior years, but rather that they are thriving.
If you would like to talk more about senior care, please feel free to get in touch. One of our trained caregivers would be happy to talk more about how in-home care can fit in with the rest of your life. Care is what we do, we are always happy to talk about how our team can help your family.
