Recently, a Coronavirus Commission on Safety and Quality in Nursing Homes was put together to help ensure that some of the tragedies that were experienced because of poor regulation and follow through in nursing homes across the United States was never repeated. This commission put together a list of changes and adjustments that could be made on a national level to help ensure the improved safety and health of those residing within nursing homes. These recommendations would also be likely to help improve the quality of life for those that work within these types of settings.
As you’re well aware of at this point, the novel coronavirus has had a much more severe impact on the elderly in our communities than it has on younger folk. There have been almost 200,000 in the United States that have died because of this illness and the complications surrounding it, and the number is still growing.
One of the biggest recommendations to come out of the Commission was a call for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to take a bigger role with overseeing nursing homes and other facilities that accept Medicare and Medicaid payments. One of the issues that was raised was that guidance for how to protect residents was not uniform. As a result, those that create and enforce policy within nursing homes were unsure of what the best practices for their residents were. A lot of people lost their lives as a result.
This is not necessarily because nursing homes were not properly run. Rather, it was a reflection of the uncertainty that COVID-19 has brought along with it. Having a program in place to help in instances like this has the potential to make nursing homes safer for the future.
