Making plans for the senior care of an elderly loved one is a tough, and sometimes thankless job. It’s one of those things that no one really wants to do. And honestly, that makes a lot of sense. Think about it for a moment: senior care is only needed when a loved one’s health or ability to care for themselves begins to decline. Right off the bat, this is a negative thing, right? No one wants a loved one to lose some of their independence.
Second, finding the right caregiver for your family can be a tedious task. There’s a lot of research that can go into the process, and that’s followed up by a lot of paperwork. If you’re like most people, this is not a pleasant process.
If you’re family is like mine, then it’s only natural that one or two people are willing to do the vast majority of the footwork. This works well some of the time, but not always. Providing care for a loved one is a big task, and sometimes one person can’t possibly do all of the work on their own, especially if that person has a job and other responsibilities. Being a caregiver is more than a full-time job in itself. If you’re trying to balance other aspects of life at the same time (and who isn’t doing this, really?), then you are going to find that you have way too much on your plate. Eventually, it will become problematic. Both you and your loved one will be on the losing end of things if this trend goes on for a while.
What can be done to combat this? First, have your family get involved. Everyone in the family has something to offer, whether it be their time, talents, or sometimes even just a listening ear. This is not a solo activity, so don’t be afraid to ask those you love to pitch in. Don’t be afraid to dish out chores. People might complain, but it’s part of being a family.
Sometimes, you need to just take charge and get care considerations covered. But even if you are the point person in your family when it comes to this, you shouldn’t be doing it all by yourself. There are a lot of resources, agencies, and knowledgeable people out there that can help you out.
