According to a study from the American College of Cardiologists, people who have experienced tooth loss because of nontraumatic reasons, such as a car accident or being hit in the face, are more likely to be at risk of developing heart disease in the future than those who have not lost their teeth.
As you probably already know, heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world. In the U.S., it is the leading cause of death in adults. And although this connection between heart disease and tooth loss has been known for a while, the exact reason why it exists is still unclear. This study aimed to find a reason why the link was so strong.
Unfortunately, the link was not found. However, doctors behind the research did state that preventative tooth care may be a good way to prevent the onset of heart disease. This is good news, especially for younger individuals. It means that all of those trips to the dentist are worthwhile. No one really likes going to the dentist, but because it is such an important thing, those twice yearly cleanings can pay out big dividends. This isn’t something just for kids to do, either. As adults, we can tend to neglect going to the dentist with the same regularity that we used to go when we were kids, but the older we get, the more important it is that we continue to be thorough in this area. Good dental health is associated with good heart health. The older we get, the more important this becomes.
That’s especially true for seniors who are are a higher risk of heart disease. Keeping your elderly loved one’s dental health at its best might also help them keep their heart strong.
