If you’ve paid attention to senior care in the news over the last few months, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard a few horror stories. If you or a loved one are currently looking for senior care to help make things better, stories like these can make you a lot more cautious about the care you seek out.
First, I want to state that these situations are incredibly unfortunate. No one deserves to be abused or neglected. No one deserves to receive anything other than the very best care possible. IUnfortunately, there are a few terrible things that happen every once in a while when it comes to senior care. Whether it’s someone that wasn’t cared for properly with regular bathroom trips or baths, someone who was neglected, or worse, the bad news tends to be a lot more media-friendly than the good news. In other words, we are a lot more likely to see the bad things in the news or on the internet than we are the good things. That’s true for senior care and pretty much every other area of life. One of the negative aspects of life is that sad stories sell better than happy ones.
Regardless of how or why such a situation could happen, it’s not something that you want to walk into. Every step to avoid a bad care situation should be taken on your end.
For example, some people opt for isolation, either on purpose or by default. However, when seniors live in isolation they face physical and mental consequences. Isolation deprives them of social interactions, leads to feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Regular communication with friends and family is important not just for the joy it brings but also because it helps prevent some health conditions. It also makes it difficult for others to notice ongoing symptoms. Isolated seniors can neglect proper nutrition and medications and put their health at risk. And without social engagement cognitive decline can sometimes accelerate.
On top of this, isolated seniors are more susceptible to scams, as they lack the support of others. It’s crucial to recognize the dangers of isolation and take steps to ensure seniors remain connected, engaged, and supported within their communities.
You should do what you can on your end to find quality care by doing your own research, having multiple conversations, and speaking with several services before finalizing a decision. But you should also expect whatever service you work with to do everything that they can on their end to ensure that a high quality of care and conditions is given, too.
That’s why we take safety measures at every step of the way when it comes to how care is administered. We provide extensive interviews and background checks before we ever hire someone. We insure and bond our caregivers. We provide ongoing training and support to give them the tools they need to succeed. We listen to our clientele and provide adjustments whenever needed.
In-home care isn’t just a product. It’s a service provided to people who deserve the best.
