Does the size of a care service matter?
Yes and no.
It doesn’t matter how big the service is as long as your loved one is getting the attention that they need and has the proper supports in place for their unique needs. Accomplishing this is the first priority for care. Size can be secondary.
But there are other things to consider.
The bigger a care service becomes, the harder it is to administer the one on one style of care that you are looking for. Now, if the service continues to hire and train employees so that they can continue with this type of model, that’s one thing. But a lot of the time, that is not what we see happen. It is far more cost effective for a care service to take on more seniors and pay the same number of employees.
This is something that could easily be abused. That’s why states have laws and quotas that must be followed when it comes to senior care. Much of the time, there are a number of employees to residents that cannot be surpassed without some sort of penalty. This can vary from state to state and depending on the time of day it is. However, even with these rules and regulations in place, there are things that can go wrong. With a bigger care service, especially within a nursing home, it is easier for residents to not have as much attention given to them. It is easy for their needs not to necessarily be ignored, but not be the center of focus, either.
This is something that doesn’t happen with in-home care. The whole point of in-home care is that it can give your older family member more specialized care, including a specialized location of their choice–their home. There are definitely perks to a nursing home that in-home care cannot replicate, but for most people, in-home care is more highly preferred because of this greater attention placed on the individual and their unique situation.
While bigger doesn’t always mean bad, there is a higher likelihood that a huge nursing home is not going to be able to give your mom or dad the high levels of individualized attention that they might need. It’s easier for them to be treated like a number, and not the beloved member of your family that they are.
