For years, researchers and those who work out in the field with elderly individuals have both come to the same conclusion: people who suffer from dementia tend to do better when they are in a familiar setting.
Unfortunately, this means that when someone’s level of care is elevated to the point where it is no longer safe or reasonable for them to stay in their own home that there can be a decline in health–both physically and mentally–when they are relocated to a care facility or nursing home. It is unfortunate because sometimes there is no other alternative. Sometimes this decline is only temporary, but sometimes it is permanent. It depends on a number of factors and varies from person to person.
Due to this concept, many care specialists are looking for help in seemingly unique or overlooked places. Architecture is one of these areas. Designers are increasingly looking at how care facilities are laid out in order to find small, but powerful, ways that the lives of those with dementia can be improved. Memory care is about more than just meeting the basic needs of those with Alzheimer’s, but about making their lives as good as they possibly can be.
If improvements in design, architecture, layout, and accessibility can do this, you can be assured that this will be a trend that continues into the future of memory care.
A decline in health is something that we all want to avoid when it comes to senior care. This is one big reason why in-home care is such a great alternative. It allows seniors to age in their own home, on their own terms. It provides support right where they are.
For some, this will be ideal. For others, it won’t be enough to meet their needs. Some people need more intensive medical attention, and non-medical in-home care can’t provide this. There is home health care available in many parts of the country, but again, this isn’t the best choice for everyone. Each situation and each individual are unique and senior care must be addressed on a case by case basis in order to be at its most effective.
Regardless of where you are in your care journey, there’s an important lesson to take away from this: there is always room for improvement. There’s always something that can be done to help make the senior care that someone receives a little bit better. This is why we are so passionate about what we do here at Paradise In-Home Care. Our goal is to give the people that we work with the best care experience that they can get. In-home care makes this a lot easier because of the individualized touch that this type of care naturally has. But there’s always things that we can do, always things that our caregivers can do, that can make it just a little bit better for you and your family.
