The number of senior citizens in the United States continues to grow. Ever since the Baby Boomer Generation was named shortly after the end of World War Two, it has been known that this huge growth in the U.S. population was going to have repercussions on the services available. However, as this population continues to age, the impact that is felt by those who are most vulnerable, such as those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, tends to be the biggest.
Spotting Alzheimer’s can be tricky. This is because not everyone that starts to show some of the early symptoms of the disease know what is actually going on. Many experience early symptoms and assume it is a normal part of aging. Some don’t even notice that they are experiencing symptoms. If the person who has Alzheimer’s doesn’t know what is going on, the odds that they are able to bring it to a doctor and get properly treated are not very good. The truth is that doctors can’t figure out a diagnosis if they don’t have the information that their patients and their patients’ families have.
On top of this, there is the potential of provider shortages. As the population grows, doctors and other professionals can’t always keep up with the growing demand. The natural consequence of this is that some portions of the country are struggling to meet the needs of the people that live there. This includes those looking for dementia treatment and care.
Getting connected to the right resources can be tough. For those with dementia, it can be even tougher.
Acting quickly when an Alzeheimer’s diagnosis is made is important. The sooner that treatment occurs, the more likely it is to have a positive impact on the person with the disease. Treatment tends to be far more effective when it begins early on in the course of the disease.
There’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. There are only treatments out there that are designed to help slow the spread of the disease, help improve the quality of life that someone with the disease experiences, and help to minimize the symptoms of Alzheimer’s that are experienced. Research continues to help us learn more, but there’s still a long way to go before effective treatments or a cure are possible, if ever.
In the meantime, giving those that are grappling with this disease the best life that they can have is important. This will look different from person to person and family to family, but ultimately, having a team of professional caregivers on your side will most likely be helpful.
