A new model has been designed to help those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease gain a better understanding of how the disease progresses as well as help them to pinpoint where they are in that progression.
They have labeled this model the “DETree.” This is short for disease-embedding tree. It allows researchers to look at different variations of the disease and how it could potentially impact the person suffering from Alzheimer’s in the future, based upon their risk factors and symptoms that they have already experienced. It is designed to give Alzheimer’s patients and their families a better understanding of what they are likely to go through.
The team claims that this new model is necessary because previous attempts to chart the course of Alzheimer’s have overlooked the degenerative nature of the disease and the transitions that come along with it. While there are certainly things that can help slow the progression of the disease, it does advance and ultimately is fatal for the person suffering from it.
This research comes out of the University of Texas at Arlington. It’s not a cure for Alzheimer’s, but it is an advancement that has the potential to help improve the quality of life that those with the disease experience. There’s still a lot of work to do, but hopefully this will act as a step in the right direction.
The research team published their findings in the journal, Pharmacological Research.
Alzheimer’s has a profound impact on both the individual who has been diagnosed with the disease and the people that are caring for them. It is more than just a physical and cognitive strain. It impacts every aspect of life, including the emotional, spiritual, and financial side of things. If families have a better understanding of the disease and what to expect from it, better preparations for all of these burdens could be made. It won’t alleviate the stress and burden of having the disease, but it can help families to prepare for the things that come along with it.
That includes arranging for senior care for a loved one battling dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is complicated and sometimes the assistance of a professional care service can help make this a bit easier. A professional caregiver with memory care training has the expertise and knowledge designed to help with the management of Alzheimer’s symptoms.
