If you have a loved one that has Alzheimer’s disease, then you have experienced firsthand the difficulty that comes along with this. Alzheimer’s presents a unique set of struggles for the individual that is suffering from the disease–memory loss, cognitive decline, loss of coordination, and more as the disease progresses.
But it also presents a unique set of struggles for the family members and caregivers of that individual. Unfortunately, not everyone is fully prepared for this. It takes an emotional toll on loved ones without doubt. Seeing someone that you care about go through the trials of Alzheimer’s is not easy. But there’s also a degree of technical knowledge that caring for someone with Alzheimer’s requires. While it is possible to gain this training, not all family members do.
Do you need to be formally trained to care for a loved one suffering from this disease? No. But it definitely can help. There is always more to learn, more skills to gain that can assist you when it comes to caring for a loved one.
Luckily, there are training resources out there. I would suggest starting with your insurance company to see what they have to offer. Many insurance companies will pay for training or even give a stipend for you to provide care for a loved one. Family care is important, and with the right supports, can be very effective. It also saves insurance companies money, which is why some have included these benefits.
If this isn’t an option, look to see what’s offered in your community. Start with your local Office of the Aging, or whatever the equivalent organization is in your area. These offices are designed to support the elderly and their families, and they tend to be the first to know when trainings or seminars are being held that can help you to gain more skills as a family caregiver. They can also help get you connected to a reputable care service in your community if you’re unsure of what’s out there.
Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease is tough. There’s no question about that. Caring for someone with dementia is a challenge, but it isn’t a challenge that needs to be attempted on your own. There are resources out there specifically designed to help those who are dealing with dementia. Memory care requires a lot of attention, and not every single care service or product out there is going to be effective.
