For a while, researchers have understood that there is a link between shingles and the risk of suffering from a stroke. After a recent study was conducted, scientists now believe they understand just why this link exists. And more importantly, doctors potentially stand a better chance of reducing the number of strokes that are occurring as a result of this.
A team of researchers that has been looking at this relationship believes that shingles can place someone at a higher risk of stroke because of a type of lipid vesicle called an exosome. These micro-cellular organs transport genetic information between cells. It’s believed that people who have suffered from shingles never see the prothrombotic exosomes that are associated with shingles leave their system, leaving them at a higher risk of a blood clot down the road. When this impacts blood flow to the brain, an ischemic stroke occurs.
The research team was based out of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. They recently published their findings in The Journal of Infectious Diseases. There’s more work to do here, but this study provides some groundbreaking information that could prove to be useful to future researchers.
Strokes take a tremendous toll on an individual, and long term senior care may be needed as a result of a stroke. Many seniors that have suffered from a stroke require assistance for the rest of their lives. But a stroke is not the only health issue that might require someone to need a little bit more help to get through their days safely. Cognitive decline, dementia, physical injury, and many other issues can contribute to someone’s need for care.
Regardless of the reason why care becomes necessary, having the right type of care is important to your loved one’s quality of life as they age. If your father is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, it makes sense that the care service that is helping out is trained in memory care.
And if your loved one wants to age in the comfort and familiarity of their own home (and it’s safe and realistic for them to do so) then the care that you utilize should take this into account, too.
We pride ourselves in providing the highest quality of in-home senior care we can. It allows seniors to live their lives like they want to, even though they might need a little bit extra help around the house. In-home care is flexible and often a lot more convenient and more affordable than other types of senior care. But we believe that the biggest benefits of in-home care is the fact that it’s provided in a one on one setting. Caregivers aren’t burdened by caring for multiple people all at the same time. They can give one person their undivided attention while they work. This helps to form bonds of friendship that can often be a lot more beneficial than the physical help that’s provided.
