The COVID-19 pandemic has been catastrophic. People have lost jobs, families have been divided, some people have even lost their lives. There has been so much loss and pain during this time. It can be very overwhelming, but for those of us that are able, it’s important to look forward and start thinking about what we can do to make the world a better place.
That’s our focus when it comes to senior care here at Paradise In-Home Care. How can we make the lives of the families that we assist a little bit better?
Luckily, there are other groups and organizations thinking this same thing right now. One of the big areas of improvement that we face as a society is in the world of senior care. There’s a lot of room for improvement, especially when it comes to how care is applied.
Besides the increased awareness that nursing homes are not always the ideal location for an aging senior (which has been discussed extensively in this blog here and here), another positive development has been brewing in the world of senior care. Employers are starting to realize just how much help their employees need when it comes to senior care.
In some parts of the country, senior care was already starting to get more recognition. New York has been one of the leaders in this area, allowing for extensions in the Family Medical Leave Act to include anyone that lives in the household, including an aging parent. This law went into effect at the beginning of 2021 and has been well received by those that have needed to use it. Most employers have been able to seamlessly add this to their list of benefits, too.
It seems like the pandemic has really pointed out a lot of areas within our society that need to be improved. Regardless of your political stance and beliefs, it’s become more obvious than ever before that not everyone in our society is doing well. Racism, sexism, and issues of poverty have risen to the forefront of our collective consciousness over the last few months. It makes sense that the issues that our older loved ones face will also gain more attention.
It’s unfortunate that people suffer. It’s devastating that there are people that are struggling and don’t have access to the care and assistance that they need to thrive. It’s our reality though. And the good that has come from the pandemic is that we are more aware of these things than ever before. Let’s use that increased knowledge to help people.
We can each take a tiny step forward in our own unique way. And when we all do this, it will help make our culture a much more loving, helpful place. Our focus here is on senior care, but that’s just one small part of our society.
As always, please feel free to reach out to us if you have questions about senior care. We’d love to share how we can make your family’s life just a little bit better during this time.
