If you have a pet, you know that they can make a big difference in your quality of life. Pets bring us joy, they help us learn responsibility as children, and they even become members of our family. Pets create joy that is hard to replicate in other areas of someone’s life.
But they aren’t for everyone. Some people are not pet people, so to speak. Others have allergies that prevent them from having the type of pet that they want. But for those that do have the ability and desire to take a pet, this can be a great way to restore a sense of purpose for someone. This is a problem that a lot of seniors struggle with, unfortunately. As someone gets older, their ability to do the things that they used to diminish. It can make someone feel like they don’t have a purpose anymore. And while you and I know that this is not true, sometimes feelings can speak a lot louder than logic. Depression and a sense of worthlessness can follow.
That’s not to say that a pet will fix everything. Sometimes there are more serious mental health issues that need to be addressed. Sometimes, something like dementia can make the care of a pet tough and end up detracting from quality of life. But pets are statistically tied to a sense of happiness for most. Elderly folks that have pets tend to be a lot happier and have more of a sense of purpose than those that do not. Again, this is dependent on personal preference and circumstance, but for many, it can be a big step forward.
There are a lot of things that a pet can do, but when you need senior care for a loved one, this probably is low on your list of priorities. That’s one of the big benefits of in-home care, actually. Because your loved one is able to stay in their own home and because they are able to maintain their normal quality of life for longer as a result of this care, things like a pet can once again become a reality for your family.

This is one of the big advantages of in-home care. Most nursing homes and assisted living facilities do not allow pets. But because in-home care is given in the comfort of someone else’s, things like pets are possible. This is just one of the many advantages of in-home care. However you look at it, it gives someone freedom to live their life the way that they want to live it and keep their daily routines as close to normal as possible.
