The term “elder justice” is a relatively new one. We have all heard about elder abuse, and we all know that it is something that must be prevented. No one deserves to be abused, and when it comes to the most vulnerable members of our society, we need to be even more vigilant that they are being protected. Elder justice goes a step beyond preventing these issues and goes toward fighting for real justice. It is about fixing what is wrong and making things right.
Justice is a big topic of discussion right now. There are portions of our community that are impacted heavily by the racial injustices that have been highlighted across our country. We want to ensure you that we stand with those that hurt. We stand with those that are marginalized. We stand with those that haven’t had a voice or a platform. We stand with those that can’t stand on their own. We stand with the vulnerable, the ones that have been targeted, and the ones that are often considered to be the least important in our society.
Black people have been targeted by societal injustice for as long as we can remember as a country. Justice is about fixing this issue. Justice will look different from one person to another, but we stand for justice.
It’s important to remember that the Black Lives Matter movement stands for seniors, too. In fact, it might even be more important for seniors because this is a population that often cannot speak out for themselves. Seniors are not always able to head out to the streets and speak their mind. They are not as likely to be able to voice their opinions on social media. They are not able to fight for their rights in the same way that a younger person would. Nonetheless, seniors deserve justice.
This can be accomplished in different ways. One way that we focus on protecting the rights of seniors is through in-home care and other types of senior care. Every senior citizen deserves senior care that is suited to their needs. This is an area where black seniors may be silently marginalized, but elder justice seeks to avoid this. Senior care should meet the elderly where they are as often as possible. There should be no fear of abuse or uncertainty of the future when that care is administered. There should be no fear of being ignored or not taken seriously because of skin color.
If you have questions about elder justice please reach out to us. Please know that our caregivers are all thoroughly screened before being hired. We do our best to make sure that we hire only the very best to come and work for us and your family. We take every precaution to ensure that every caregiver that we employ is in the business for the right reasons. While we should all be doing our part to ensure that elder justice happens, the best way to alleviate an injustice is to ensure that it doesn’t happen in the first place.
