There’s a lot of noise out there about COVID-19, and unfortunately, not all of it is very helpful. Some of the news is designed to create clicks for companies and add a bit of sensationalism to the day. Other information is too confusing. Hopefully, this brief guide will help to cut through all of that and give you exactly the information that you’re looking for.
First, if you think that you have COVID-19, don’t panic. Yes, the illness can be scary, but there are a lot of things that you can do to keep yourself from getting even sicker. You can also take steps to ensure that those around you do not get sick, too. This means that you should refrain from leaving the house until you know for certain that you are healthy. Even if you’re remotely suspicious that you might be ill, these preventative measures will ensure that you are not spreading the disease. This is the whole point behind social distancing. The more we practice this, the better off those who are more vulnerable to illness in our community will be.
Next, you need to get in touch with a medical professional. Do not just go to your doctor or to the emergency room if you think that you have symptoms of COVID-19. Not all facilities are equipped to test or treat this illness and going to the doctors may inadvertently make others sick. Call your doctor or the hospital and get their guidance before you leave your home.
One of three things will happen when you call your doctor. They will advise you to come in for testing. They will evaluate you over the phone and determine that your symptoms are not too severe and that you should stay home in self-isolation. Or, your doctor will not respond. If your doctor does not respond, only go to the emergency room if you have severe symptoms.
Information regarding COVID-19 and what should be done to keep ourselves and our families safe is changing on a daily basis. Pay attention to the news and statements from the CDC and the Governor. These will help you to stay on top of the situation and be a bit more prepared to keep those around you safe.
The good news is that people DO recover from this illness. If you look at the number of worldwide cases, the recovery rate is much higher than what the news will initially make you believe. This is a scary time, but if we stick together, practice social distancing, and act according to the guidance that California and the CDC have been supplying, we can get through this and keep those around us as safe as possible.
