When you first set up care for an elderly loved one, the care service that you chose probably asked you a lot of questions. One of these questions probably had to do with goals of some sort. Even if you were not asked this directly, a care service should be evaluating what it is that you and your family hope to achieve with the care that you are asking them to provide. If that service can help you to achieve that goal, then it’s likely that the care service was a good match for your mom or dad. It doesn’t matter if the care came in the form of in-home care, assisted living, or in a nursing home. All senior care has a goal, and a high quality care service will make sure that your goals can be met before they decide that they are the best service for you to use.
When the goals of senior care change, a reevaluation may be needed. If this is the case, a transition to a different type of care will be needed. One of the most common transitions that we come across is when end of life care is necessary. Hospice care, or palliative care, is a very different type of care than other types of senior care, so this transition is often overwhelming.
However, the transition to hospice care doesn’t need to be a dramatic shift. This is one of the reasons why in-home care is such a valuable resource. Because in-home care takes place in a spot where your loved one is comfortable, this can be an ideal situation for those suffering from physical disabilities and dementia. Increasing stress levels can have a negative impact on the health of elderly individuals, and staying in the home can eliminate the stress that comes along with relocating. It’s not perfect for everyone, but it is ideal for many.
Hospice care can also be provided in the home in many cases. Just like a professionally trained in-home care specialist comes into your loved one’s place to provide care, a professional hospice team can provide in-home palliative care. This has all of the same benefits that in-home care has when it comes to living in a familiar setting and reducing the stress of relocation, but the type of care that will be administered is slightly different.
Depending on the particular service that you use, this may be a different individual providing the bulk of the care, or it might be the same person. You may find that you need to switch to a different company. Whatever the case might be, this reduces a lot of stress and has the potential to make the life of the person in need just a little better. Of course, you want to be sure that in-home care, be it hospice or general, is a suitable course of action with a physician before you begin. If it is, this care has a lot of benefits that come along with it. Besides being less stressful on your parent, it also tends to be a lot cheaper than other types of care are. Even wealthy families are concerned about the cost of care, and this is one way that you might be able to reduce the financial burden on your family.
