Sometimes, all that it takes to help an elderly loved one live a better life is a tiny little adjustment to their daily routine. For seniors confined to a wheelchair, installing a little ramp to help them get through doorways can make a world of difference. Elderly folk with arthritis can benefit from a chair that can move upward so that getting in and out of it will not be as stressful on their knees. Sometimes a cane or a walker is all that’s needed to help them get around the house a little more easily. It’s really up to your loved one’s individual condition and needs.
At other times, one small change isn’t nearly enough. This happens, but it shouldn’t happen as frequently as it does and it should always be a last resort. When this is the case, sometimes the nursing home is the best choice. However, before you resort to this option, always make sure that you have exhausted your other choices. Not only are nursing homes expensive, they are often cold and unfriendly places. They’re nothing like the comfort of home. Again, sometimes there’s no other alternative. But if there is, make sure that you are going with that if you are at all able to. Your loved one will thank you for it.
Just keep in mind that sometimes the best course of action lay somewhere in the middle. Perhaps your mom or dad needs more than a couple safety railings installed to stay safe, but the nursing home is clearly too much for their conditions. When the decision is not quite clear cut, the best course of action can involve having an in-home care service evaluate your needs. This way, you have a professional looking at the situation and making a more informed decision than what you are likely to come up with on your own. The truth is, most people simply do not know what all of their senior care options are, and therefore cannot make an educated decision on how to effectively care for a loved one.
The biggest benefit of an in-home caregiver though, is that they provide companionship and care. This is a huge thing, especially if you are out of the house during the work day and they are left unattended. It keeps them safer and it gives them someone to keep them company. However, there are secondary benefits, and this is something that should be given more attention. For starters, if you hire an experienced caregiver, they will know if and when in-home care is not enough. Countless studies have underscored how beneficial aging in place is, and an in-home caregiver accomplishes this while still providing for needs. It’s a great first step, but occasionally, more is needed. A caregiver will let you try and keep your loved one where they want to be, but when it’s not enough, they can make a far more informed decision thanks to their experience. This is a priceless service in itself, and it’s one that only experience can provide.
