If you are new to being a family caregiver, you are probably overwhelmed right now. That’s normal, but it doesn’t mean that the whole process is going to consume you. In fact, there are a lot of things that you can do to help yourself while you help your elderly loved one. It’s important that you are taking care of yourself, even though that might be the furthest thing from what you are thinking right now. If you are not well enough to give the best care possible, your mom or dad will not be receiving the best care possible. It’s a natural flow of events, and it all starts with how well you are able to care for yourself before you care for another. Here are a few tips that we have so that you can start being a better caregiver today.
Learn: If your parent has an illness or a disability, it’s important that you learn what you can about it. The more educated you are about the illness, the more prepared you will be when something new develops. It reduces the likelihood of an emergency situation, and it helps you to customize the care that you are administering more specifically to what your mom or dad needs. It all starts by you knowing the ins and outs of how their specific situation impacts them. This can be a tough task, but once you start, you will see that it really helps a lot toward their quality of life and happiness.
Take Breaks: You need time for yourself. During the day while you are helping out, be sure to schedule some time so that you can sit down, get a meal in you, and relax for a few minutes. This isn’t deserting your duties as a caregiver; it’s helping you to recharge while your loved one is sitting down and reading or watching television. There are a ton of things around the house to do, but they can wait for 15 or 30 minutes while you rest for a few minutes, eat, and destress yourself to get ready for the next part of your day.
Get Help: You can’t do it all by yourself, so don’t try. Have a family member or trusted friend step in and help out once in awhile. This gives you a chance to relax and get ready for your next session. If you try to go nonstop without rest, you will burnout, and then nobody benefits. If things are starting to get too tough for you, hire a professional in-home caregiver. These people are senior care specialists, and they do this for a living. The best caregivers act out of compassion and kindness, and they understand just how tough giving care is for families. You are not deserting your duties here, either. In fact, this is the most responsible thing that you can do if you notice that your quality of care is declining. It helps your parent to get the highest level of help that there is. If you are not able to do that on your own, then enlisting the help of a professional is the best thing that you can do for them.
