Digital care currently has a lot of positive hype surrounding it. Many experts believe that things like telemedicine and remote health consultations have the potential to help improve the lives of seniors, especially those that currently live in isolation or have difficulty leaving the house for appointments.
Great strides have also been made in the field of senior safety. Smart home systems have revolutionized how we can keep our elderly loved ones safe and supervised, even when no one is near. The hope is that advances here will help to improve the overall health of our community.
But this doesn’t mean that the platform is without difficulties. In fact, many seniors do not have the technical experience to properly use digital health care systems. This goes across the entire market, from signing up for a Medicare program online, to checking in with a doctor through the tablet to have blood pressure monitored. There are many examples out there that show that digital medicine cannot do it all.
Digital care and digital medicine can be a good step forward when it comes to helping people who live secluded lives–just like many of our elderly loved ones and neighbors. But what we need to keep in mind is that even though it’s a step forward, it is not a solution. At best, this is a way to help improve health for some because it gets them a step above minimal levels of care. It can also help to improve supervision, if that is needed. But a computer, no matter how helpful, cannot replace a real human’s touch.
You probably crave much more than a robot or a digitally distant doctor to be there to help out with the care and love of an elderly loved one. While technology can do great things, it cannot do everything that a physically present person can. The biggest task that a computer will never be able to fulfill is companionship.
That’s what we here at Paradise In-Home Care take pride in. There are a lot of other in-home care services out there, but not many that provide a focus on the unique individual needs that each person that we work with possesses. Each senior citizen has a unique personality, set of interests and desires, and a set of needs that they require assistance with. Technology, no matter how great, cannot do this yet.
