Over the last ten years, the outlook on senior care has changed quite a bit. It used to be that only 50% of seniors were likely to need long term care during their life, but more recent statistics say that the number is actually 70% right now. In other words, the situation is becoming more severe. While seniors are living longer and this is a good thing, the need for finding appropriate senior care is steadily increasing. In order to keep the quality of the lives of our loved ones as high as possible, we need to be proactive. This means that we need to start thinking ahead and take action earlier.
Others aspects of care have changed, too. Health insurance laws have changed and they look like they will keep changing, and this has had a big influence on how care is administered. Seniors rely heavily on Medicare and Medicaid, and the new laws have put restraints on both. It is becoming more and more important that preparations are being made long before these things come into play. At the very least, this means having talks about senior care, figuring out ideas for different scenarios, and putting things down in writing. It may also require legal documents like advance directives, applying for long term care insurance, and scouting out senior care sources such as different in-home care services or assisted living facilities.
Planning is perhaps the most important thing that you can do. When you plan ahead, you are ensuring that you make better decisions later on. You don’t need to make those decisions right away in most cases. But, when you do need to make one, you have a groundwork already set up to guide you. You will be more informed, have your loved one’s only already, and you will have reached a basic conclusion of which types of care are best for certain situations. Is it perfect? No, of course not. But it gives you a big jump start, and it puts the odds in your favor when it comes to giving your family the best care you can get.
Some people find it helpful to use a planning team when getting ready for senior care. Family and is important here, and some families choose to use financial advisors, attorneys, senior care doctors, and social workers when making their decisions, too. What you use and how you use it will be up to you, but making informed decisions is a must. The better your information and the better you are able to apply it, the better experience your loved one will have when it is time for them to have senior care applied.
Helping an elderly family member is hard. It requires time, hard work, and a lot of compassion. In order to give the best care you can, you should start thinking about it as early as you can. Inform yourself and the person who will likely need care; it will make things go so much smoother later on.
