If you make a small mistake at your place of employment, it’s probably not going to be a big deal. If a paper isn’t signed or if you forget to submit something on time, there’s usually a degree of flexibility with your employer. There might be some sort of plan put in place to make sure that these things aren’t overlooked in the future, but you’re probably not going to get in major trouble for the first occurrence of something like this. Mistakes can be unfortunate, but we are all human and things get overlooked from time to time. Most employers, depending on what you do for a living, are able to overlook things like this.
When a mistake happens in senior care, the results are not as forgiving. Instead of a desk job, caregivers work with people. Their goal is to help keep people safe and healthy–and mistakes can jeopardize this. Of course, some mistakes are more severe than others, but regardless, it is people that are impacted when they happen. Now, add into the mix the fact that seniors are already a vulnerable population. They may have more severe health issues, or more advanced physical needs.
Either way, caregivers need as much training as possible in order to help prevent mistakes. Mistakes do happen, but we want to do everything that we can to minimize them. This is why we provide ongoing training for the people that we employ. We conduct thorough background checks before we hire them, and ensure they are fully trained before they are sent out in the field.
Many of the mistakes that we see in senior care happen because of deficiencies in the system. This could be staff shortages in a nursing home, a lack of training in caregivers, nurses, or techs, or it could be a disconnect between the type of care being received and the needs of the individual being served. It also can mean negligence or another type of criminal activity. Regardless of the deficiency and regardless of the motivation behind it, it’s all a bad situation. No one wants to see a family member go through anything like this.
If a mistake does happen, we want to make sure that the damage done is as minimal as possible. That’s why our caregivers are completely insured. No one wants to have to rely on an insurance policy. Think about your auto or home insurance. The only times you would ever use those things is if there was an accident or some sort of unexpected damage. It’s not a pleasant thought. However, it is reassuring to know that there’s a safety net if something were to happen.
We are human. But that’s not enough to give someone peace of mind. You deserve better. If you do have questions about care and the safety policies that we have in place here at Paradise In-Home Care, please feel free to ask. You can reach us by phone or email. We’d love to answer your questions about this, or any other care related questions you might have. If this requires a longer conversation, that’s okay, too. That’s why we have a free consultation service. Just let us know; we’d love to start the conversation.
