Researchers have recently found help for heart attack victims from a very unlikely source: a deadly, venomous spider.
The spider, called the Fraser Island funnel spider, is regarded as one of the deadliest spiders in the world. Scientists have isolated a molecule found in the venom of this spider and have begun to develop a drug that has the potential to repair damage done after a heart attack. They also believe that this drug can help minimize issues when a transplanted heart is given to someone in need.
The isolated molecule is being referred to as Hi1a. It is a protein that has already been known to be of help to stroke patients. Previously, researchers have found that when this protein is given to stroke patients, it can help prevent damage to the brain–as long as eight hours after the stroke has occurred. Currently, modern treatment tends to only be effective if it is given within the first two hours of a stroke’s onset.
Finding another use for this protein was the next step, and looking at heart attacks seemed like the next logical step. Luckily, this insight seems to be right on target. More research is needed, of course. But preliminary tests hold a lot of promise for improving heart health.
The research was done by a team of scientists from the University of Queensland in Australia. They believe that access to this drug, or one like it, will help to improve the prognosis for those that suffer from a heart attack in rural areas, where lack of medication and immediate treatment can be fatal. There are big implications around the world in this area as this is something that could be administered by an ambulance or first responder crew.
Here in the United States, heart disease is the number one killer. Finding new methods for treating and preventing heart attack would go a long way toward saving lives and improving the outcomes for those that do suffer from a heart attack. Many times, a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiac event can be crippling. Even if the person survives, there is a long road for recovery ahead of them. Some people never fully recover from this. Unfortunately, even if the individual survives, they often have a lifetime of need ahead of them.
