A mini stroke, or as it is often referred to as, a transient ischemic attack, doesn’t always appear to be as serious as a major stroke. And there’s a good reason why this is. Typically, a mini stroke only lasts about 24 hours before symptoms are resolved. This is in stark contrast to a major stroke, where symptoms may last for the rest of someone’s life. But this does not mean that a mini stroke is a minor event.
The immediate symptoms between a mini and major stroke are similar. It’s the long term outcome that is different. Still, mini strokes often go ignored. They may be noticed, but there’s a strong chance that nothing is done to help prevent further issues in the future. This is a big cause for concern. Although a mini stroke might not have a huge impact on health, research shows that if someone has one stroke, they are very likely to have a second. Understanding why the mini stroke took place, and then working with a doctor to help prevent a second stroke from happening is important. It may be what’s needed to prevent a second stroke from happening. There’s no guarantee that a second stroke will not be a major one.
The sooner steps are taken to help treat and prevent a mini stroke, the better. If you’re not sure where to start, call your doctor. They’ll be able to steer you in the right direction and help you get connected to the necessary resources so that you can start taking steps toward better health. Even if this doesn’t seem urgent, it can easily become so.
If you have a loved one that has suffered a major stroke, there’s a good chance that your life has completely changed. That loved one probably needs a lot more help and attention than they once did. Some families can adjust to this easily, but some can’t. In fact, the more serious the health event was, the harder it is going to be for the whole family. Having a professional on your side that knows what they are doing and how to help is important. Not only does this help keep your loved one safe, it is good to have a pair of eyes that is trained in what to look for in the chance that something were to go wrong. If another stroke or some other emergency does happen, you want someone that knows what to do in order to keep your family member as safe as possible.
This is where professional care steps in. A caregiver can help your loved one stay home where the whole family wants them to be, and still ensure that they have the advanced degree of supervision that is needed for them to stay as safe as possible.
