For many years, the verdict on eggs and whether or not they are healthy has been swinging back and forth. Some have said that eggs are unhealthy and should be avoided, only to have this followed up a few years later with the exact opposite, that eggs are healthy and we should be eating more of them. With the news and popular opinion swaying back and forth with such regularity, it’s hard to know whether we should be eating them or not, and whether or not they have any sort of long term impact on our health and that of our family members.
A new study out of Finland sheds a little bit more information on the matter. These researchers found that moderate levels of cholesterol consumption and eating an average of one egg per day did nothing to have a statistical impact of someone’s likelihood to suffer from a stroke.
One of the other observations that came out of this was that diets rich in eggs and other sources of dietary cholesterol did not have any sort of impact on those that were carriers of APOE4 phenotype. The population within Finland is well known for having a higher than normal percentage of carriers of this phenotype, which can be a risk factor for issues when it comes to the metabolization of cholesterol.
In other words, eggs didn’t do much to help or hurt people when it came to the risk of strokes.
What does this mean for you, though? Should you be eating more eggs?
Really, it depends. Each individual is different and has different dietary needs. What’s right for you might not be right for me, and vice versa. If you do have concerns about dietary needs or what you can do to help an older loved one improve their health through changes in what is eaten, be sure to get in touch with a professional in this area for guidance.
This need for customization is true of many other aspects of care, too. Senior care in general relies on customization in order for it to be effective. The needs of an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease are going to be quite different than what an older woman who is dealing with severe osteoporosis is going to need. When you choose a senior care service, you want to make sure that they understand this and that they will do all that they can to take your mom or dad’s unique needs into account.
If you’re not sure what that might look like, please feel free to get in touch with us. Our trained caregivers can help get you pointed in the right direction during a free consultation. After that, what works best for you will be more clear, and you will know where to go to get it. It might be our service, it might not be. But, knowing these things is the only way that you can effectively help your parent to get the care and assistance that they need to thrive in their senior years.
