Opioids are often prescribed to help those that deal with chronic pain live a better life. However, a new study that looks at the relationship between opioid use and the development and growth of chronic pain and gives us a little bit more information on how this works.
The study found that those with chronic pain are far more likely to abuse opioids in the future, even when their pain is not an issue. The fear of future pain is often a motivating factor for these individuals.
The team was based out of the Ohio State University. They published their findings in the journal, PAIN Reports.
It’s important to remember that other health conditions are often linked to opioid use, including premature death. Opioids are extremely addictive and can easily be abused. Unfortunately, opioids can lead to worse issues at times than they were prescribed to help treat. If you’re prescribed opioids, it’s important to work closely with a doctor and follow those directions precisely.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter exactly why your loved one suffers from chronic pain. Helping them to relieve this pain and live the high quality of life that they deserve is what’s important. In many cases, that will mean understanding where the pain comes from and then taking steps to correct it, if possible.
Prevention is the best way to treat chronic pain, of course. But that’s not always the point in time that we find ourselves at. If you or a loved one are currently experiencing chronic pain, prevention of greater symptoms might be helpful, but it’s often too late for the initial stages of prevention, like this study tackles, to be of any sort of benefit. Hopefully, the above mentioned study can help lead to better treatment of chronic pain with fewer ongoing issues.
Having a care team on your side that understands chronic pain, what can help to alleviate it, and understand the proper course of action that doctors have laid forth is important. When a team can work together for the good of the person they are working with, a better outcome can often be achieved for that individual’s quality of life.
