The housing situation all across the country has been chaotic the last few years. When it comes to senior housing, things are even more so. The limited amount of housing out there, coupled with the fixed salaries that most seniors deal with makes paying for senior housing difficult.
But there’s some good news on the horizon.
In the second quarter of 2024, industry reports indicate that the move in rates for assisted living facilities and skilled nursing homes declined. This, out of context, doesn’t really tell us much.
But when you consider both the senior care crisis and housing crisis that we are experiencing in the U.S., we have some good news. It means that the resources that communities have–on average–are currently moving in the right direction to help the seniors that are pursuing and need housing.
It’s also important to note that this same survey saw a decrease in the amount of people pursuing independent living options. This can mean a few things–but ultimately what it comes down to is that fewer seniors are moving out of their home than they were at this time last year.
The rate of those pursuing memory care has also dropped, but this category saw the slightest amount of decrease–highlighting the ever-present needs of those battling dementia.
Ultimately, you do have a lot of choices when it comes to senior housing. There are a variety of options to cater to different needs. Independent living communities are for seniors who are active and need minimal assistance, providing amenities like social activities, meal plans, and housekeeping. Assisted living is for those who require help with daily activities such as bathing or medication management, offering 24-hour support while promoting independence. Memory care facilities are designed for individuals with dementia, providing specialized care in a secure environment. Nursing homes offer round-the-clock medical care for seniors with severe health issues or post-surgery recovery needs. Retirement communities provide a range of care options, from independent to skilled nursing, allowing residents to age in place as their needs change. What is available to you and your family will depend on your community and a number of other factors. However, it’s important to know that you likely have more choices than you might think.
Staying in your own home might also be a strong choice. In-home care helps you to accomplish this by bringing the assistance to you. Senior care can come in a lot of different forms, but in-home care is perfect for those that don’t have advanced medical needs and want to stay right where they are. Instead of worrying about finding housing, you can rely on the housing that is already in place.
